Smuggler Dilemma Privateer Tales Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Jamie McFarlane Mikael Naramore Fickle Dragon Publishing Books Reviews
I really enjoy the characters in this series, I also like the universe that McFarlane has created. This story was a fun, if predictable, read. It still has a sense of early Heinlein style adventure. There is a strong sense of bigger and better things to come with the first mention of "gate travel" and the crew starting to wean themselves from the Mars Protectorate. I liked the book, but felt that is was just filling a gap between something old and something new.
Again a quick read with lots of action and drama. The characters are ripe with imagination and integrity and I love Cap. I encourage readers who want fun and action to read these books.
This is a great continuation of the previous books. I loved every moment of it and found it almost impossible to put the book down even knowing I have to get up early in the morning to go to work. The characters are great, the pace is perfect and the story is exciting and suspenseful. This book even has a proper ending ).
If you haven't read the previous two parts of this storyline (books 2 and 4 are side stories and are not required for the main story line) you will want to read those first. They are worth reading and you will want as much of this story as you can get anyway.
I am looking forward to see what kind of trouble will the Loose Nuts get themselves into next time.
Captain Liam Hoffen and company are hired to locate a battleship operated by the deadly pirates known as Red Houzi. The pirate fleet has just decimated a naval force, and the Navy must regain control so people don’t panic. Liam’s unorthodox tactics are the only thing that might help them gain the upper hand. But when Liam spies the enemy ship, he decides that rather than call in the Navy as he’d been ordered, he’ll attack the vessel and take it over instead. Meanwhile, he struggles with his girlfriend’s recovery from disabling injuries. Can she manage well enough to come along as his pilot? This story contains the usual battle scenes, along with interpersonal scenes that develop the characters, but it was a bit light on plot.
I readily concede I know naught about book publishing, especially here in the beginning of the world changing digital revolution, but I do feel that most series have opted for the chapter masquerading as book premise when the entire series could have been one or two books. Privateer is one of those series, but is saved by being one awesome read. The author has cajoled me into a sentimental attachment not only to his characters but the ships they fly in. There are no cliff hangers so far (Book 5) just a bunch of loose threads waving in the wind which means that yes, from here I start downloading more of the tale (s) to my .
I'm fully subscribed to the universe that Jamie is creating and find that I really care for these characters. I really like the friends and associates Liam Hoffen keeps and I'm thankful that Jamie seems to like them as well. I appreciate that serious thought went into these stories and that it is brain power, dedication, and realistic risk taking as opposed to magic technology and pure luck at the heart of these stories.
In this fine installment, Liam moves beyond being an effective tactician toward the start of being a strategic thinker and he now leverages and has to worry about a small but growing community of people and ships that are dear to him. The development and growth of our protagonist was done well and is much appreciated.
This review covers "Buccaneers", "Smuggler's Dilemma" and "Parley". Why? Somehow these three books got published in the series without me realizing it. When I discovered Parley had been released I immediately got it and finished it quickly only to discover the other two were out there waiting. So I picked them both up and read the three back-to-back.
I find the series very entertaining. Liam is maturing and his relationship with Tabby developing. The whole crew Nick, Marny, Jack, Tali, Celina and the folks just play off of each other so well. The adventures are real and this is a crew you just grow to like.
Keep them coming. I am having a great time.
