THE GOOD:
The story:
Wow, the first scene in this book really shook me, just a warning that it does graphically depict domestic violence - but not in a glorifying way - it really does give an insight into how damaging it can be to someone mentally not just physically.
Both Maria & Owen have survived traumatic pasts, and have very few people to rely on for support. They don't trust other people - especially Maria, who often has flashbacks to her assault when other people (men in particular) get too close. Her best friend Tina is the only person who knows what happened to her & Tina tries to help her push past her fear of people & trust again.
Owen also suffers from flashbacks to his traumatic past & avoids crowds & social situations too. And the book follows both their stories of overcoming their fears, with the help of each other. I absolutely loved that at the climax of this story, it was refreshing to see the heroine take charge of a situation & realise her own strength
The characters:
Owen & Maria are very similar characters, not just because of the issues in their past, but also the way they have dealt with it, withdrawing into themselves & focussing on their studies. However, despite their similarities, you can still easily differentiate their voices in the alternating POV (something that many authors seem to struggle with).
I really liked Maria, I connected with her straight away & could feel that she really wanted to move forward with her life, but was scared & doubted her own strength. I loved how she was proud of herself as she made progress & stepped outside her comfort zone - she could see how far she had come. Owen was sweet, he could see that Maria had gone through something & wanted to help her.
The romance:
The romance between these two was so beautiful. It was very realistic - awkward at times with each of them having very little experience it relationships. But that's what made it so believable.
It was a sweet and tender romance, not the usual angst filled relationship. Their romance began as a tentative friendship and slowly built into a romance as they began to understand each other. It was beautiful to watch Maria & Owen grow throughout the story with the mutual understanding & support from each other.
The Writing:
Nadia's writing was really beautiful, she doesn't shy away from the difficult issue & doesn't sugar coat anything. The story felt very real & I became emotionally invested in the story. I especially love the way she handled the romance. They both have trust issues for obvious reasons, and as a result some of the interactions between them were a little embarrassing but so realistic. As neither of them have been intimate with anyone before their love scenes were also written with a genuine 'first time' feeling - I couldn't help but giggle when Owen is describing Maria about to have her first orgasm, it was so sweet.
THE BAD:
Looking at the dates/timeline that this story is told along, the progress that they make in their relationship etc may have been a little fast. However in saying that, I didn't notice that as I was reading (and besides, everybody handles trauma differently, so it wasn't really a big issue for me)
Also for some I think the graphic descriptions of abuse may be a bit too much, but for me they only added to the realistic & emotional nature of the story.
FINAL WORD:
This was a confronting look into domestic violence & sexual assault, and how it can effect people for the rest of their lives. I loved the fact that this has a proper ending to the book while still leaving their story open for a sequel - can not wait to read it!

In The story of "Lost" we meet Maria, a young college student who is haunted by a horrific incident from her past. She's never dated and the whole idea of meeting someone and going on a date terrifies her. She considers herself broken and a part if her feels she's not worthy of a good man. The hero of the story is Owen. Owen is a TA for one of her math classes. He finds himself drawn to Maria, not only because of her beauty, which she attempts to hide, but because he senses the pain she's hiding. He senses it and relates because he has scars of his own he's hiding.
This story is a dark romance that tugs at your heart-strings. Both characters are so torn and battered, both emotionally and physically that you can't help but fall in love with and cheer for them. The author develops them well, and we see their transformations as the story goes along. (Maria more than Owen) The main conflict of the story is their individual battles to open up and realize they are deserving of the love they find in each other.
If your looking for a light-hearted story this isn't the one. But if you're looking for a deep, meaningful, well-written and edited story than you won't want to miss out on this.
I was in the process of reading a different book but just wasn't into it and really wanted some type of romance book. I've just recently become addicted to romance novels thanks to Elle Casey's Shine Not Burn and so I went to and ended up downloading Lost. I really like romance books that have a bit of a darker edge. Books like this and Find You in the Dark by A. Meredith Walters. I guess I just relate better to broken people being one myself and although I've never been abused by anyone but myself I can still relate to these types of characters but it's not so much that I like reading about abused or broken people, I enjoy the whole aspect of redemption, light and finding love for those who are different, messed up or have had a lot of problems whether they are self inflected problems, abuse by others or mental problems. I just really enjoy that light at the end of a dark tunnel and Lost gave me exactly that.
Nadia Simonenko writes beautifully and it's obvious she takes her writing seriously. There wasn't a typo or error to be found in this book which is always nice. The characters were very fleshed out and were easy to relate to, care about and root for all the while you're anger at what was done to them just grows and grows with each page. Each time Maria fumbles around a stranger or becomes scared it just made me angry that someone would do this to her just like each time Owen relives his past I just wanted to teleport into the book and beat his father black and blue. Both characters have many scars, some of them are flesh deep and others are much deeper. Their nightmares haunt them both in their sleep and in the waking world and you can't help but to root for them with every tiny baby step they make towards each other and embracing a life without pain and horror. The author does a lovely job of letting you into the characters head and it's as if you're right there beside them through the whole journey. The author deserves some major props for tackling such tough subjects as rape and abuse and for not sugar coating anything. There's nothing nice about abuse whether it's mental or physical and there's no easy way to talk about it sometimes but she handles the subject with a deft touch. I only wish someone had called the cops on Owens dad when he showed up. That creep should be in prison but unfortunately much like in real life a lot of people do not do this. I imagine that it's very hard when someone you love is the one who is abusing you. There are a lot of conflicting emotions but when it's a parent there's still some love no matter how horribly they've hurt you. Even though they're not deserving of that love it's hard not to want acceptance and love from a parent or sibling and you can't just turn that off even if it's in your best interest.
I've already started the second book, I just had to see what was going to happen next. There were a lot of very sweet moments to counteract the darker moments in the book and I highly recommend Lost. If you're a fan of romance, of redemption and happiness no matter how bleak things may look or if you've ever dealt with these types of situations personally then I think you should read this book. There's a lot of good things to take away from it. I think Owen and Marie could probably use a lot of therapy but finding each other has been really good for both of them. Such a good book and I enjoyed it a lot.
